Last week in the hot summer heat I cycled to the launch of Melbournalia League, the fourth in the series of CBD pop up selling an array of Melbourne design goodness. I did a brief talk about my love for Melbourne, design, shopping and bikes before checking out some of the cycling-related goodies on sale and chatting to like-minded cyclists.
Melbournalia League is only open until 24 December so drop in to have a look quickly! It is in Exploration Lane at The League of Honest Coffee, the city caffeine temple of boutique Melbourne coffee roaster Padre.
Vogue asked cycling fashionistas Lily Cole, Agyness Deyn, Hanneli Mustaparta, and Pamela Love for their tips on cycle chic.
Lily Cole: “I mostly wear trainers or flip-flops,” she continues sheepishly, “but I’m thinking of experimenting with wedges—I have Ferragamo and Christian Louboutin versions…I take a light sweater in case in gets chilly.”
Hanneli Mustaparta “Biking makes it surprisingly easy to do a full day in Chloë Sevigny’s Opening Ceremony heels,” she says with a laugh. “Walking in them tires me out!”
Agyness Deyn wouldn’t consider riding wearing anything other than her beloved Dr. Martens or gladiator sandals with her vintage frocks.
Pamela Love feels passionately about her sturdy lace-up boots and trusty Converse treads and swaps her long, bohemian dresses for super-soft Current/Elliott jean-shorts and Sophomore T-shirts.
Gap opened its new store in Melbourne Central last weekend and when we walked inside we noticed…bikes! In the front window, in the store, on the walls.
Quick attachment with straps that just buckle around the rack—nothing to dig into my side later and this would fit on any rack.
Nice bright lining.
Pockets inside and a separator in the pannier that will make it easy to develop consistent packing habits.
Big outside pocket on the pannier has a magnetic closure—no more snags.
Straps on the bottom of the tote used to fasten it to the top of the rack would also let me hang a yoga mat on there.
Reflective elements on the sides that will show while I’m riding. Plus the light fabric will just show up more.
Last but oh, so far from least, they look like purses. Nice finish, nice hardware, protected zippers, pretty fabric (with a water/fade resistant finish).
Melbournalia is a series of pop up stores opening in four Melbourne CBD venues (and one repurposed newspaper stand) hosting displays of Melbourne design goodness with stationery, jewellery, homewares, fashion, coffee, art and design from some of Melbourne’s best-loved boutique design brands.
The fourth pop up store dubbed ‘Melbournalia League’ is opening tonight on Exploration Lane at The League of Honest Coffee, the city caffeine temple of boutique Melbourne coffee roaster Padre.
Padre and Melbournaliaare both passionate advocates of shopping locally and getting there by bike. Bicycles are one of the best ways to explore Melbourne, so get on yours and come on down to the launch of Melbournalia League tonight!
Joyce from CycleStyle will be speaking about her love of cycling, shopping and Melbourne with another special guest, Treadlie magazine.
Thursday 8 December
6-8pm at The League of Honest Coffee 8 Exploration Lane, Melbourne
The Bicycle Wine Rack was our best-seller at the Melbourne Design Market last Sunday. The leather and brass contraption drew many admiring glances and our market stock was sold out by lunch time (don’t worry, we have more available online).
For those of you who’ve bought the Bicycle Wine Rack or have it on your wish list, here’s a handy installation video.
Fit The strap is designed to be snug so that when it stretches, it will be the right size and not too loose. The first couple times you put a wine bottle in it it will feel a little snug and the first couple of times you connect and disconnect it from the metal post it will feel a little snug.
Leather Don’t be afraid to rub down the rack with olive oil once a year to keep the leather slightly moist. The material is a vegetable tanned leather that will change in colour and feel depending on how often you use it. It will darken with sunlight significantly.
Clamp The clamping system is meant to be snug enough to keep the leather from moving around. It’s not invisible so don’t tighten the clamp harder than you need to.
