Frietag 2 E.T. phone home

via: DoubleOhTwo

Do you remember the scene in E.T. where Elliot is trying to take E.T. to the forest so that he can call home?  And E.T. is snuggly wrapped up in Elliot’s bike basket, and then… E.T. makes Elliot’s bike fly?!  And we see the silhouette of Elliot and E.T. fly across the front of the moon?

We’ve  always dreamed of riding a flying bike.  Do you think that maybe E.T. came back to visit earth and helped to style this awesome photo shoot for Freitag?

We bet that there’ s a mobile phone in that Freitag messenger bag and so E.T would have no problem calling home.

Warm up and dash out with Dashing Tweeds

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I wasn’t old enough in the 80s to get into the Olivia Newton-John/Jane Fonda fitness trend.

Now’s my chance to finally break out some legwarmers. Specifically, a very cool pair stripey reflective legwarmers from London-based weavers, Dashing Tweeds.

Dashing Tweeds weave beautiful wool tweed fabric which is stocked at tailors Anderson &  Sheppard, Graham Browne and Connock & Lockie. What’s particularly special about their tweed, which is called Lumatwill, is that it is threaded with 3M luminescent thread and coated with Teflon, which means that it’s reflective at night and waterproof.  Check out some of the photos here.

While Australia’s relatively mild winters probably don’t justify a full three piece tweed wool suit, we do get cold enough, especially here in Melbourne, to need some sort of winter-wear on our bikes. That’s why CycleStyle is bringing you the Dashing Tweeds legwarmers, which are threaded through with the same 3M luminescent thread as the tweed.

Not only are these legwarmers tres chic and useful for keeping pants away from your bike chain, they are a good safety feature because anything that is strapped to your ankle, reflective and constantly moving will more readily attract the attention of motorists and pedestrians. We’ve tried them in front of car headlights, and wow they are super-bright!

The Dashing Tweeds legwarmers are selling exclusively in Australia at CycleStyle. Stock is limited as the company only does small product runs, so snap them up quick!

WE ARE LIVE!

CycleStyle home page screenshot 605x436 WE ARE LIVE!

Or maybe that should read ‘We are alive!’.

CycleStyle is officially open for business, and our excitement holds no bounds.

The store has been our passion, our waking thoughts, our middle-of-the-night to-do lists and constant conversation topic for months. We’ve been planning, writing, buying, designing and building the business, while dealing with full time work, three blogs, five weddings, an interstate trip, an overseas honeymoon and then being given notice to vacate by our landlord.

Busy doesn’t even begin to describe these past few months.

But we’re here and we’re happy and we hope that you love the store as much as we do!

Finally, we must give a big thank you e-hug to the following people for their advice, support and hard work: Tim; the parents; London agents Huy and Nathan; super-supportive friends Jenny, Brendan, Michael and Andrea; site designer and blog crush Karishma; business and design guru Nikita; friend and stockist Alex from Eco Fashionista, our countless supporters and friend Kimberley and hairdresser Stelios for planting the seed for CycleStyle in the first place.

A bag named Melbourne

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Dutch lifestyle brand and bike manufacturers Johnny Loco produce a range of beautiful leather travel bags called Melbourne!

We’re not sure why they believe these stylish bags are particularly ‘Melbourne’ (unless they’re referring to Melbourne, Florida?) but we’re in good company along with San Francisco and Dubai.

As we suspect neither of the latter are particularly cycle-friendly cities (too hilly, too hot) we’re waiting for the Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Vancouver, New York and Portland.

Girls guide to riding in a skirt

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

sartorialist Girls guide to riding in a skirt

(Photo via The Sartorialist)

Over at City Girl Rides they have posted up some easy tips for riding in a skirt.

some things to keep in mind is that short skirts, tight skirts, or flowing skirts tend to ride up the thighs when pedalling, and when a gust of wind sweeps by it can really be a show stopper.

Umm yeah. I’m pretty sure some passing motorists have seen more than they wanted to see when I’m riding a bike. I’ve discovered that jersey wrap dresses, while great for the office, are possibly the worst design for riding a bike (other than a chiffon evening number I wore once and tore holes in the hem).

The tips are common sense mostly and will only add to your ladylike demeanour. So don’t feel that you can’t ride a bike in a skirt!

We desperately want Outlier pants

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

SUPER EXCITING UPDATE 10 June 2010: CycleStyle will be Outlier’s first retailer in Australia. Our first lot of stock will be the Women’s Daily Riding Pant in Black.

Outlier is a New York-based company which caught our eye with their fabulous slim-fit cycling pants for men and women.

Their core product is the mens Outlier 4Season OG Pants (US$180). The fabric stretches and breathes, and is made of 80% nylon, 10% polyester and 10% spandex. The fabric’s coating includes nano-sized spears that help moisture roll right off.

They’ve also recently launched their women’s Daily Riding Pants (US$180), using the same stretchy, water-resistant and breathable fabric, and expanded the range to include merino Ts, hoodies, shirts and caps.

We’re desperate to stock the stylish Outlier pants here at CycleStyle – especially after blowing out the bottom of our jeans cycling around rural China! Unfortunately they are a very small company and only looking to sell from their own online store at this stage. We’re hoping all of you will clamour for them so that we can show the stats to the guys at Outlier and say ‘Hey look, there’s a big bunch of people who don’t live in New York and who would love to be able to get their hands on your pants!’

In the meantime, feel free to drool over the fashionable items and enlist your Stateside friends and family to grab a pair for you.

A Chat with Jellybean Bikes

Monday, May 10th, 2010

A cool new service has just landed in Australia! Jellybean Bikes is a custom-made bike design service where you can choose the rainbow colours of your ride, from the handlebar, frames, spokes and wheels.

Jellybean Bikes are designed in Melbourne by Kath Banger and Ben Stibbard and here’s my interview with them. Thanks Kath and Ben!

Kath and Ben, tell me a bit more about your backgrounds?

K: I work in fashion, designing clothing and I ‘ve designed for various brands around Melbourne. I have quite a passion for good design and riding my bike. Like fashion and accessories I thought to myself why couldn’t we bring the two together and create designer bicycles.

B: When you work in the design industry you develop an eye for these sorts of things. I have a background in architecture rather than products but as Kath touched on, as a designer you have a certain appreciation for good design; whatever it may be.

IMG 369 1024x721 A Chat with Jellybean Bikes

What inspired you to move into the world of designing bicycles and what’s the story behind your business Jellybean Bikes?

K: My love of design, colour and riding my bike.

B: Likewise… we wanted a cool commuter without the branding.

K: Ben and I had been researching bikes and we discovered a similar business in the US that customise bikes. That was it; I was sold. As they did not ship to Australia the journey began.

I travel a lot to Hong Kong so we contacted a bicycle supplier with similar bikes, sent them specifications for the bike, I picked it up boxed and bought it back home.

After arriving home Ben and I opened the box and we were so excited by what we saw we thought that they would be well accepted in Australia, particularly as there is such a huge single speed bike culture in Melbourne and in many cities across the world.

What’s unique about Jellybean Bikes?

K: You can ‘Colour your ride’. It’s a personal experience to customize your bike. Jellybean Bikes allows you to express your individual personality. And at $599 you could have a bike for every day of the week!

B: Your bike can say a lot about you. These bikes give you the opportunity to have a say about the way you want it to look. Its up to you.

IMG 398 1024x609 A Chat with Jellybean Bikes

Why do you like cycling, and particularly in Melbourne?

B: I commute daily on my bike and its such a great way to start your day. Its quite satisfying to continue on down the bike lanes past the banked up traffic in peak hour, but just getting out with a bunch of friends for a ride is where its at for me.

K: Melbourne is a great city to cycle in. There are great rides that take you across the city and out to Templestowe. My favourite ride is across the Yarra Boulevard and out to Heide to see a great exhibition. On warm balmy nights it’s down to St Kilda a quick stop at Banff (145 Fitzroy St, St Kilda +61 3 9525 3899) and then down to Brighton Beach.

Have you faced any challenges getting Jellybean Bikes off the ground?

K: Yes as in any new venture, there are always challenges. There’s lots of research involved, both about our customer base and developing relationships with factories in China. Possibly the biggest challenge was perfecting the quality of the bikes – researching the right components to ensure we offer good quality, great design for a reasonable price.

B: The quality of individual components is really important. It’s taken us quite some time to get every little bit right. We just kept going until we were happy with the end product. Those who have had the chance to check out the prototypes will agree that the extra time an effort we put in to sourcing the components was worth every second.

IMG 377 1024x741 A Chat with Jellybean Bikes

What advice would you give to someone starting their own business?

K: Have a passion for what your product. It’s half the battle and makes it a much more fun!

B: Don’t compromise on what you set out to achieve. You have to hold on to those initial ideas.

Impossibly chic

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Blog Fri 19 Mar1 Impossibly chicI loooove this photograph. So Parisian, so polished, so glamourous.

But on closer inspection, I think it might be impossibly chic.

While I often ride around in stiletto heels, I’ve never yet managed to ride in a pencil skirt without splitting the back seam in a very unladylike way. You’d better hope that the models’ skirts were extra stretchy.

Still, it gives me a bit of inspiration for some movie-star makeup and 40s elegance for my next cycling outfit.

What do you think?

In a little homage to John Brack’s iconic work Collins St, 5pm, today we’re presenting you with Collins St, 1pm – as snapped by CycleStyle.

Blue and yellow, yellow and blue

We love the red helmet, red gloves and the long red scarf (careful in the spokes!) and the blond hair streaming in the sun.

Making a lunch date perhaps? Check out the blue rims and the leather saddle on her ride, which matches the block colours of her outfit and schoolyard leather satchel perfectly. Oh, and we have a real weakness for duffle coats.

DSC03360v1 Collins St, 1pm

More bold, primary colours. Notice how her yellow helmet matches her back wheel hub? Although we’re not sure how comfortable it would be to carrying two swinging shoulder bags like that.

Vintage handlebar bags – a crafty idea

Beatrice Holiday Edith on Bike Vintage handlebar bags – a crafty idea

I first spotted the products by Beatrice Holiday on Design*Sponge. Anything mentioned on the huge US design blog is worth a look, so I zipped over to the Beatrice Holiday site and discovered that Alison, designer and crafter in Denver, Colorado, was making handlebar bags and matching seat covers out of vintage fabrics and vinyls.

Chic, functional and sustainable – what’s not to like? So here at CycleStyle we’ve had tea and scones with Edith, Edna, Harriet and Lucy, each of which comes with an optional leather strap in case you want to turn your handlebar bag into a shoulder bag.

Because the bags are made from vintage fabrics, they are limited edition only. So once they’re gone, they’re gone forever!

If you buy a Beatrice Holiday handlebar bag and want a seat cover to match it, send an email to info@cyclestyle.com.au and we’ll help you out.
