Fast Rider comes to Australia

Monday, April 19th, 2010

fast rider Fast Rider comes to AustraliaFast Rider is one of the inspirations for me starting up CycleStyle.

When I was in Amsterdam I spotted a pony-tailed girl on a bike with a stylish shopper bag that I really liked – but when I got back to Australia I was really surprised to find that no one in Australia stocked Fast Rider products.

Hailing from the spiritual home of urban cyclists, the Dutch company make excellent quality panniers and bags (as well as clothing and other accessories) and they’re stylish to boot.

I’m happy to report that the first shipment of Fast Rider products has arrived and Christmas has come early CycleStyle HQ. Our stockroom is full of panniers and shopper bags (including the original one I spotted in Amsterdam, yay!), from luxurious to retro-styled, and I can’t wait to see them let loose on Australian bikes.

CycleStyle will be stocking a selected range of Fast Rider products exclusively in Australia. If at any time you spot another Fast Rider product that you’d like, send an email to info@cyclestyle.com.au and we’ll help you out.

A drink with Emily Taylor from Po Campo

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Blog Mon 2 Apr 21 A drink with Emily Taylor from Po CampoOn the weekend I met up with Emily Taylor, one of the designers of the Po Campo handlebar and rack bags.

Emily happened to be in Melbourne for her honeymoon and was kind enough to chat me through the Po Campo product range over a beer at Federation Square.

The products are cheerful and fun – the handlebar bag straps onto any handlebar when you’re on the bike and transforms into a cute clutch when you’re off the bike. It’s their bestselling item.

The rack bag is a larger bag which straps on top of a back rack. I have the duck blue rack bag and have found it to be surprisingly roomy – I’ve even managed to fit my yoga gear inside. It has reflective strips on both ends, which was handy for the night where I had to ride home without lights in Richmond as I’d misjudged sundown (darn non-daylight saving time!).

Both bags use a clip lock system which makes it easy to adjust to any handlebar or rack. For the upcoming Spring/Summer 2010 season Po Campo are also releasing a new ‘Bungee Bag’ which uses an elastic bungee cord to strap the bag onto a handlebar or rack – so it’s kind of a hybrid of the handlebar bag and rack bag and Emily was carrying it as her handbag for her travels around Australia.

Po Campo rack bags and handlebar bags will be selling exclusively in Australia through CycleStyle at launch, with the Bungee Bags probably coming later in the year.

The CycleStyle logo – not an easy process

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Check out our logo.

Do you see a bike? Do you see a man or a woman? Are they sporty or cycling at a leisurely pace?

cycleStyle noTag 827 x 211 300x76 The CycleStyle logo – not an easy process

We thought that getting a logo designed would be a relatively easy process. We chose Seattle-based company Inkd because:

-          we aren’t graphic designers and wanted an expert’s eye and expertise;

-          we liked the designs we saw on the Inkd website;

-          we needed a logo quickly – their FAQs said first iteration would be within 24-48 hours; and

-          to be absolutely honest we didn’t have much money and they were having a 40% off sale.

Amongst other things, our design brief said:

-          Our customers: men and women who enjoy cycling as an everyday activity and who want to look stylish on their bike. They definitely don’t want to don ‘cycle wear’ – tight, lyrca, fluorescent, sport-orientated;

-          the Cycle Chic Manifesto is relevant for describing our customers;

-          the logo should project stylish, chic, elegant, fun, functional; and

-          the typography should be bold, punchy yet classically elegant, maybe slightly vintage feel.

Easy peasy – right?

We’d set a deadline for two weeks. And waited. Then chased up about whether they’d received the brief. Then crawled out of bed at 630am to go on Skype to discuss the brief.

And waited some more. Then chased up about when we would get the first draft.

Finally we received the first draft with six very different designs. We sent them around to our trusted friends for their opinion and one friend, a designer by trade, responded with:

Logo 1: When you zoom in to actual size, the logo is a complete mess! It looks painful the way she is sitting.

Logo 2: OK, but nothing special

Logo 3: The styling is more appropriate for an older cocktail going crowd

Logo 4 – She looks like she is going backwards

Logo 5 - Yikes!

Logo 6 - No relevance, poor inappropriate typography

Oh dear.

Getting back on the email/Skype to Inkd, we let them know what worked and what didn’t and looked forward to receiving our next draft, emphasising the timelines we had been working towards – which we’d now passed.

Second draft arrived, honing into four versions of one design. Frankly we were a bit frustrated, as we didn’t feel that our feedback had been adequately incorporated into the redraft:

  • The person now looked male rather than female, instead of gender neutral;
  • colours were still not bold and punchy; and
  • the legs, the spokes and the ‘Y’ were all twisted together and mixed up, which wouldn’t look any good printed small.

Anyway, to cut a long story short – we managed to get the logo you see today after five drafts and four weeks of to-ing and fro-ing across timezones. Towards the end we have to acknowledge that Inkd were very efficient and accommodating of the need for extra changes even though we’d only bought a package allowing for three drafts. But we don’t think we’ll be using them again.

Lessons we learnt?

-          When you’re running your own business, allow more time to do everything especially if they involve relying on other people to get back to you.

-          Sometimes it’s worth paying more money to get something done properly.

-          Poor customer service will come back to haunt you – your customers will tell other people about it.

-          Listen carefully to what your customers have asked for and deliver.

Do you think we’re right?

Carradice front1 We (heart) innovations from Carradice of Nelson

Our shipment of Carradice Bike Bureau bags arrived today, all the wahttp://cyclestyle.com.au/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=24y from Nelson, Lancashire.

We were impressed by the small details, starting from the packaging. Firstly, the bags come packaged in a plastic bag with a snap-lock handle. This may not seem that exciting to you, but when you are constantly lugging bags to the stockroom it is a very handy little feature. So thank you to Carradice for that little innovation :–)

The innovation doesn’t stop there. The rack system can be covered up and secured with velcro when you’re carrying the bag around, or when the bag is on the rack it flips over the top of the bag to help further protect the drawstring opening.

The bags are made from durable water resistant cotton duck canvas and stamped with reflective Carradice logos for night visibility.

Inside, the bag is very spacious (it holds 26 litres) and best of all includes a removable padded laptop puch which can also be strapped on as a shoulder bag. So now you can take your computer to work on your bike, safe in the knowledge that it is protected and that you and your bike look stylish!

The Carradice Bike Bureau is the perfect accessory for the commuter cyclist and is selling exclusively in Australia at CycleStyle. For more information or to get yourself on the waiting list for launch, email us at info@cyclestyle.com.au.

What do you think about CycleStyle?

suggestion20box What do you think about CycleStyle?

Happy New Year!

Now that the Christmas gift-giving rush is over and we’ve eaten all the prawns/Christmas pudding/gingerbread cookies that we can fit in, we’re using January to take stock of our first 6 months of business and to plan a bigger, better 2011.

Since the beginning we’ve asked our customers after their purchase for feedback on their shopping experience at CycleStyle. We’re a young, small business offering something new and different for Australian cyclists and we figure if you don’t ask questions then you’re never going to know the answer (even at the risk of some ego-bruising).

However, we know there’s a lovely bunch of you out there who are visiting the site, reading the blog, are our friends on Facebook and Twitter, and yet have not yet purchased from us.

Basically, we’d really appreciate it if you could answer one question.

What do you think we can do better?

Whether it’s the colour of our website to the tone of the blog or the number of products we offer, we really want to hear what you think so that we can make CycleStyle even better for you.

If you’re a bit shy saying it via the comments section, then please feel free to email us on info@cyclestyle.com.au.

Thank you!
