We visit Sydney several times a year and we’ve had great fun discovering the city’s ever-expanding network of cycleways with a rental from Humble Vintage.

Now City of Sydney has a free pocket-sized booklet featuring eight adventures for you and your bike in inner-Sydney.

You can order a hard copy of the booklet by calling 9265 9333 or just download the ride you want.

You can also check out where we rode to in Sydney on our CycleStyle (virtual) world tour.

Ride to Work tomorrow and win spot prizes!

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

join revolution 2011 Ride to Work tomorrow and win spot prizes!

We’re gearing up for Ride to Work Day tomorrow – are you excited too?

This year we’re riding to the City of Yarra Ride to Work Day community breakfast at Edinburgh Gardens, North Fitzroy. We’re sponsoring some fun spot prizes for stylish cyclists – skirt garters for the ladies who are cycling in their skirted finery and fun bells for those with bell-less bikes.

You may even spot Cr Alison Clarke, the Mayor of the City of Yarra, in a bespoke Pageant Queen Reflective Sash. Cr Clarke is a mad keen cyclist and rides an electric Gazelle bike to her meetings as it’s faster and more convenient than driving from place to place. What a great Ride to Work Day ambassador!

See you tomorrow!

The Moving Feast – Saturday 24 September

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

feast The Moving Feast Saturday 24 September

Food and cycling are probably our two favourite things, which is why we’re so excited to hear about ‘The Moving Feast’, a celebration of food and cycling in Sydney.

The new event is taking place on Saturday 24 September at 9am which is 350.org‘s Moving Planet day – so it’s also a day to promote moving away from fossil fuels (and taking our food and transport systems with us!)

Two groups will cycle along two separate routes (East Side and West Side rides) visiting Sydney’s farmer’s markets and food hot spots on the way. The rides will end with a party in Prince Alfred Park at midday so that you can enjoy your food with your new friends!

Check out the Moving Feast page for full details (including route and maps) and follow their Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Bicycle NSW Spring Cycle is Sydney’s largest celebration of bike riding. This year’s event held on Sunday 16 October is part of the new Sydney Rides Festival from 8-16 October.

For the hard-core cyclists there is the traditional 55km Classic Ride but this year there is also a shorter 16km City Ride, a more leisurely amble which will feature many of the highlights of the longer ride (including riding over the Sydney Harbour Bridge).

You can register for the ride here. $5 of each entry fee goes to charity and this year the Spring Cycle is proudly supporting 3 charities:

  •  National Breast Cancer Foundation – Team Pink
  • Amy Gillett Foundation
  • Bicycle NSW Environmental Trust

To make the event a really fun day out, Bicycle NSW are running several competitions including a best-dressed competition. You could opt for a super-stylish Parisien look, deck yourself out in head-to-toe tweed, dress as your favourite super hero or go as way out as you can.

The winner receives a $250 voucher to spend with us! So what are you waiting for?

Tangled Journeys – Sunday 28 August

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

TANGLED JOURNEYS 1 lowres Tangled Journeys Sunday 28 August

Tangled Journeys is a day celebrating the art of decorating your ride with yarn. Whether it is practical pieces, like skirt guards, saddle covers, maybe even handlebar bags, to frivolous fun with tassles, pom poms and tube covers. It could even be items to wear!

There will be examples to see, a kick-start with a crochet expert setting people off on their first project, patterns, yarn and the Taco Truck.

Some of our lovely crafty products will be on display and on sale on the day, including our crochet skirt guards, snoods and trouser cuffs.

See you this Sunday from 10-4pm!

Tokyo Bike Shop Melbourne

P1070947 Tokyo Bike Shop Melbourne

The newest addition to the Fitzroy/Collingwood bike shop enclave is Tokyo Bike, a small independent bike brand hailing all the way from Yanaka, Japan via Sydney.

We’ve previously written about Tokyo Bike’s Sydney store on The Design Files and now husband-and-wife team Fuyuki and Yuki Sagahara have headed south to bring their colourful steeds to a lovely light-filled shop off Smith Street.

The fitout is simple but thoughtfully furnished with small tokens of Japan, from the sprig of cherry blossom at the entrance to the series of overhanging Japanese fisherman’s lamps.

P1070923 Tokyo Bike Shop Melbourne

Tokyo Bikes are made with the urban cyclist in mind. The wheels are designed smaller for more stop-start riding through city streets and are perfect for moving through Tokyo’s and Melbourne’s back alleys. The pared back frames are super-light and the colours are eye-catching. In fact, a Tokyo Bike is one of “50 things to improve Your life” according to the July 2011 edition of Monocle!

Four styles are available – the classic CS, Bisou step-through for the ladies (and enlightened gents), SS single speed and Sport for the speed demons. You are encouraged to test ride any of the bikes in streets around the store, hence the deliberate choice to have a shop off a main street.

The shop also has a neat curated collection of accessories, from Knog lights and locks to Gropes leather grips from the UK.

Everything’s Connected

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

The City of Sydney has produced a series called of videos ‘Everything’s Connected’.

Similar to the videos produced by Transport for London, these short vignettes tell stories from real-life Sydney bike riders. They express the joy and freedom of riding a bike around the city and watching them made us feel happy!

You can view and share them all from YouTube. Enjoy!

Wet and Wendy Pop Up Umbrella Shoppe

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Melbourne weather forecast for Wednesday - Rain at times. Windy. 12-15 degrees.

In Melbourne it seems that we’re in store for yet more rain. But don’t let the drizzle stop you from getting out and about, because Wet and Wendy have taken over one of the city’s round disused news stand on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets and transformed it into a neat little stall.

The racks are filled with fabulous rain gear, from umbrellas to rain coats. The small retractable umbrellas with a cheerful rain print on the underside are $39.95 and the large umbrellas are $49.95. In weather-wear, the stylish waterproof cape coats are $99.95 and the remaining handful of samples of the silver and navy blue rain coats are $60 (snap them up quick – we sold out of our stock in a week and these are the last ones left).

One of the new events this year is CultureCycle, a guided bike tour run in conjunction with ArtCycle on this Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August.

The CultureCycle guided tour offers a way of viewing the city, experiencing cultural attractions and actively participating in Sydney’s design culture. Cycling, museums and crochet do have something in common! The day includes stops at the Australian Museum, Remy and Lees, CarriageWorks, Powerhouse Museum‘s Love Lace exhibition and a crochet workshop!

The Third Annual Sydney Tweed Ride departs Sydney Town Hall at 9am this Sunday 31 July.

We’re assured that it’s an awfully fun affair – not pompous, just jolly!

If you have nothing to wear – never fear! A pop-up Tweed Outfitter will be stationed at MC Cyclery’s city store (230 Clarence St, Sydney) to doll you out in style.

The ride concludes with a picnic, Tweed games and a delightful fashion event.

Roll-Up Bicycle Valet Parking

Roll-Up is a new bicycle valet parking service which is launching at State of Design.

DSC018191 Roll Up Bicycle Valet Parking

Instead of locking your bike up to the nearest lamp post, cyclists can get their bike valet parked for free by the fun-fair themed Roll-Up crew. It’s a great initiative as the provision of safe, secure and convenient bike parking will hopefully encourage people to take active and sustainable transport to festivals and events.
