Melbourne Bike Share En Masse 2012

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

DSC05758 364x540 Melbourne Bike Share En Masse 2012

Friday is the most relaxed day of the work week for most of us, so what better way to celebrate than with a bike ride and free stuff.

In 2011 Andy White aka cycling personality Fyxomatosis gathered together cyclists from all over Melbourne to create a new World Record for the most bike share bikes in one place at the one time.

In 2012 Cheryl Lin from Business Chic and I joined the group in another world record attempt at En Masse. So we didn’t reach a higher number this year but we did grab our free Melbourne Bike Share bike, pedal our way to uber-sustainable cafe Silo by Joost and enjoyed free coffees (Cheryl was very jittery after drinking numerous coffees in the quest to win a Giant Via bike!), a filling egg sandwich and pork sandwich between the two of us, muffin and a chat with Melbourne’s cycling community.

If you missed En Masse this year then look out for event details in 2013. You can also see more bike goodness from Fyxomatosis at the inaugural Australian Custom Bicycle Show coming up on 1 and 2 December at  167 Gladstone St, South Melbourne.

Park in our Park in a Park on PARK(ing) Day – Friday 21 September 2012

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

header 605x143 Park in our Park in a Park on PARK(ing) Day Friday 21 September 2012

PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered car parking spots into temporary public parks. PARK(ing) Day aims to bring attention to the need for urban open space, to generate debate around how public space is created and allocated and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … until the meter runs out!

In 2011 there were 975 parks in 162 cities, across 35 countries and 6 continents. In recent years, participants have built free health clinics, planted temporary urban farms, produced ecology demonstrations, held political seminars, built art installations, opened free bike repair shops and even held a wedding ceremony!

This year’s PARK(ing) Day is on Friday 21 September and we’ve teamed up with Roll Up Valet Parking to present an awesome event in Melbourne. We want to show people that bikes are fun, cheap, convenient, ease congestion, bring businesses more customers and generally play with the concept of ‘parking’ and ‘parks’.

So with the support of City of Yarra and Awesome Foundation Melbourne, we’ll be offering bicycle valet parking in a single car space and we’ll build an adjoining temporary grassy park for everyone to enjoy, cyclist or not.

Stay tuned to the Roll Up locations page and our blog to find out more – and mark Friday 21 September in your diaries!

Sydney Cycle Chic shows some colour

Monday, July 30th, 2012

Sydney Cycle Chic have recently had a style facelift, with much larger photos taken using Instagram. We love their new look and particularly this photo, showing a kind of burst of bike colour we enjoy seeing around our streets.

Primary colours

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

This lady rocks primary colours with her bike and her outfit – red, yellow, blue. What’s even cooler is that we’ve spotted her red Kronan bike parked in our neighbourhood before! Now we know the owner is equally stylish.

Stylish Cyclists Bring Back the Bike Budget

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Despite the pouring rain hundred of Melbourne cyclists gathered on the steps of the Victorian Parliament yesterday to rally the government to bring back the bike budget.

We snapped a couple of riders looking particularly cycle chic in the rain. Looking good Kristy, Erica and Owen!

Zero-bike budget rally in Melbourne tomorrow!

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Ballieu bust Zero bike budget rally in Melbourne tomorrow!

If you haven’t already marked it in your diary, please make the time to attend the Zero-bike budget rally in Melbourne tomorrow morning.

Bicycle Network Victoria has called out to all Victorian bike riders to jam the steps of Parliament to condemn the Baillieu Government’s decision to cut funding for bike infrastructure to $0.

Yes, you heard right. Absolutely nothing. Desperately needed lanes, signals, intersections and other urgent safety improvements have all been scrapped.

We need safe roads and bike paths for the growing number of cyclists in Victoria and the short-sighted decision is damaging to community health, congestion and public transport overload.

Join us tomorrow morning to send the loudest and clearest possible message to the Baillieu Government that bike funding must be reinstated.

Look Before Opening – Get your free stickers

Friday, June 8th, 2012
abous lbo Look Before Opening Get your free stickers

Look Before Opening is a new bicycle initiative that is hoping to reduce the incidents of ‘dooring’ ie a cyclist who gets hit by a person opening a car door without looking first.

Cars and bicycles need to co-exist and Look Before Opening aims to change the habits of drivers who simply forget to look before opening their doors. So they are providing free stickers to put on the inside of car doors to serve as a visual aid to look before opening.

Grab your stickers now (Australia only) http://www.lookbeforeopening.com/get-some-now/ If you want more than 50 (maybe you own a taxi fleet or white van service??)  call them on +61 (03) 9005 0055 to organise stickers for you.

Mr CycleStyle – Collins Street Melbourne

P1100219 Mr CycleStyle Collins Street Melbourne

We couldn’t have dressed him better if we’d recruited him as a CycleStyle model.

We spotted Ant rocking some serious cycle chic as he cruised down Collins Street on his black Papillionaire Classic bike.

P1100221 605x925 Mr CycleStyle Collins Street Melbourne

He’s wearing lots of gear that’s available from CycleStyle – the Tie Dye Peace Nutcase Helmet, the Banjo Brothers Medium Commuter Waterproof Backpack and in turns out the Wet and Wendy black mens raincoat that he bought from us!

P1100220 605x984 Mr CycleStyle Collins Street Melbourne

We also like his cuffed trousers and canvas lace-ups for casual yet practical biking style.
