Meet us at the Melbourne Design Market

We’re very excited to be showing off CycleStyle at the upcoming Melbourne Design Market.

From 10-5pm next Sunday 11 July, Federation Square carpark will be transformed into a fabulous and free design market featuring the latest in fashion, homewares, furniture, lighting….and now bikes and cycling style!

We’ll be sharing a stall with custom-made fixie bike duo Kath and Ben of Jellybean Bikes – we may even have to learn how to put a bike together between now and then :–)

The Melbourne Design Market is a great chance for you to check out some of CycleStyle’s products, have a test ride on a Jellybean Bike and basically spend a Sunday browsing and shopping for cool stuff to some DJ tunes.

We’ve been fans of the market from way back and it’ll be so much fun being on the other side this time. Please come and say hi!

BikePark for commuter cyclists

Despite the best efforts of organisations like Bicycle Victoria and various councils and state governments, not every workplace has facilities for cyclists who want to commute to work. I know, I’ve worked in places that ranged from providing individual lockers and numerous showers, to being told to just park my bike outside on the street and with one unisex shower that I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole.

If you work in the Melbourne CBD and your workplace doesn’t have adequate bike parking facilities, BikePark might be the place you’re looking for. BikePark is a secure bike storage space located in vault 15 of the Banana Alley vaults, accessed from the Yarra side of Flinders Street station near Queensbridge, and I visited there recently when I went to chat to them about CycleStyle and to give them some business cards for their reception area.

The facility holds 150 bikes and is accessed by secure swipe card, with CCTV monitoring in all public areas. A casual user has access 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM for $6 a day (not including locker or towel hire). Registered members for 1, 3, 6 or 12 month periods have 24/7 access for approximately $7 a day, and you will get allocated your own parking space, a locker where you can keep your clothes and toiletries and free towel use. All change rooms have hairdryers, irons and ironing boards so you can go to work wrinkle-free!

In addition, BikePark provides complimentary hot drinks, pay as you go next-day valet laundry service and convenient access to bike mechanics who will pick up your bike, service it and return it to BikePark. To expand their offering beyond a mere parking facility, for serious cyclists they have also just started morning spin classes with professional cycling coaches and upcoming events include basic DIY maintenance, talks for women cyclists and a bike safety course.

To find out more, check out BikePark’s website and Flickr stream and keep up to date with Facebook and Twitter.

Meet Abe Burmeister and Tyler Clemens of Outlier

Abe Tyler 605x907 Meet Abe Burmeister and Tyler Clemens of Outlier

This is a great story and interview with the two guys behind Outlier, Abe Burmeister and Tyler Clemens. The two New Yorkers met in their local coffee shop, discovered that they shared a passion for cycling and for making high quality products, and within a month Outlier was born.

Sarah has only been commuting by bike for 6 months, so hats off to her for persevering through the winter weather.

To keep herself cosy she’s dressed for work in a black swing jacket with checkerboard trim from Pussycat Black (an independent boutique in Brunswick), black leather driving gloves and a favourite winter cycling combo, knee-length leather boots, opaque tights and a stretchy wool skirt. Her Longchamp Le Pliage handbag has been tucked into her back basket.

To be honest, what really caught our eye was Sarah’s beautifully rosy cheeks as she went to park her bike. After a bit of a brisk cycle, who needs makeup?

Cycling in London? It’s the best, trust me.

I can exactly pinpoint the moment when I transformed from a casual city pootler to a full-blown urban cyclist.

I shipped my bike to London and used it as my main mode of transport for two years, day-in, day-out. Through sweaty summer tube strikes and frosty winter mornings. Using it to get to work, to gigs in Camden, art galleries at Southbank, the opera at Covent Garden and Portobello market. NEVER dressed in lycra (in fact, I rode to my birthday dinner in a tutu skirt one year).

My friends, family and colleagues were initially aghast. ‘Cycling in London? With all those mouthy black cabs and huge double-decker buses rearing up behind you? Don’t you feel unsafe?’

Well, the brief periods where I did feel a bit unsteady (my first encounter with Shepherds Bush roundabout and the Hammersmith Flyover) were completely outweighed by the joy and freedom I felt cycling around the city at my own pace. My favourite route was to travel at twilight from my home in Paddington, crossing Hyde Park, skimming past Buckingham Palace, waving to Big Ben and crossing the Thames bathed in the colours of the London Eye. Every time I rode on Westminster Bridge I would slow down, drink in the view and breathe a huge sigh of gratitude for having the opportunity to live in this vibrant city.

In fact, I still get a little homesick remembering it. And if my little anecdote doesn’t convince you why cycling is the best way to get around London, maybe this video from ibikelondon will.
